What is Access Gap?
How much can I save by using Access Gap?
Access Gap is a scheme to reduce your out-of-pocket doctor expenses. First you need to ask your doctor if they participate. If they do, we pay them more than the Medicare Benefit Schedule fee – resulting in lower or no out-of-pocket expenses for you.
Don’t worry if your GP gives you a referral to a particular specialist, you can still take your referral to any specialist doctor (within the same area of expertise, naturally). Even better, ask your GP for an ‘open referral’.
To make it easier to find doctors with a track record of providing Access Gap services, we’ve added a new search available here.
The ‘Procedure fees’ tab displays the doctor’s gap-free record.
Step 1. Navigate to the search page
This is it right here peoplecare.com.au/Members/Providers/Doctor
Step 2. Search
- specialty and location
- doctor name
Step 3. Click on a doctor
On the search results page, click on any doctor you’re interested in.
And you’re asked if you’d like info on Consultation fees or Procedure fees.
Health funds don’t pay towards specialist consultation fees, because these are outside the hospital system (the good news is that Medicare rebates generally apply), so the info you need is on the Procedure fees tab.
Step 4. View their Access Gap history stats
Just remember that you need to ask your doctors to participate in Access Gap and ask for a quote before you go to hospital, known in the industry as 'Informed Financial Consent'.
