Have you seen those ads on TV encouraging us to get active?
You might be forgiven for thinking that the slogan 'Find Your 30' challenges you to reach your health at age 30. That'd be pretty challenging for those of us who are a bit long in the tooth and lacking ambition for youngsters shy of the 30 mark.
Thankfully the Australian Government's campaign wants you to find 30 minutes of physical activity, five times a week. That's far clearer.
So what's the fuss about?
Australia has some problems across the board:
- 1 in 2 adults isn't exercising enough*
- 8 out of 10 children aren't exercising enough^
- 3 in 5 Aussies over 65 reported being insufficiently active in the preceding week**
- 7 in 10 Aussies over 65 are overweight or obese**
How much exercise do we actually need?
That depends on your age. Current Department of Health guidelines suggest the following:^^
|Birth-one||30 minutes a day of tummy time|
|1-5||180 minutes a day +|
|5-17||60 minutes a day +|
|18-64||150 minutes a week +|
|65+||30 minutes a day|
Now’s the perfect time to find your 30. So get on your health app/watch to track your progress and encourage your loved ones to get moving on positive changes.
