Jab the flu away this winter

Cup steaming hearts

Flu is seriously the ninja of viral infections. You can play all your cards right – eat well, keep fit…then BAM! He sneaks up and game over. What to do?

Get the flu vaccine! It works and with peak flu season not until August, you can still beat that ninja to the punch with a jab.

Flu vaccine 101

I’m keen, but can’t it give me the flu?

No, no. The vaccine contains inactive virus strains – so there’s no chance of getting the flu from the shot itself. Bin that old excuse!

How quickly does it work?

Your shadow skills will be ready to take down the flu ninja after just two weeks! How good is that?

Can everyone get vaccinated?

Just about everyone, but it’s always a good idea to check before you get the jab, especially if you have any major allergies or health issues.

Bouncing bubs under 6 months can’t. And lovable little monsters between 6 months and 9 years will need two shots, at least four weeks apart. So keep those bribes (lollipops) handy!

Where can I get it?

So.Many.Places. Hit up your doctor, large pharmacies, health centres and mobile vaccination services.

Is it going to break the bank?

Unlike some super expensive shots (rabies, we’re looking at you), it’s only about $20. Less than most yoga classes!
Still too much? You might be good for a freebie (minus the consult fee) if you’re:

  • over 65
  • under 5 years old
  • pregnant (not the best reason to have a baby though!)
  • an indigenous Australian 15 years old and above
  • suffering a medical condition that makes the flu extra risky (check with your doctor)
  • prone to man flu and have a partner willing to shout you

Can I claim it from Peoplecare?

The flu shot isn’t usually covered because the cost is below the Government’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) amount of $39.50. We’re still letting you know because (a) it’s still important for your overall health, and (b) nobody wants to be stuck in bed with only a box of tissues for company if they don’t have to.

Can I claim other vaccines?

Maybe. If your shot is non-PBS and over $39.50, it’s usually covered under your Extras. So, if you’re off to trek Machu Picchu and need yellow fever, you can claim part of the cost (the benefit depends on your level of cover). If you have any questions, just give us a holler on 1800 808 690 or info@peoplecare.com.au. Oh, and feel free to send us an alpaca pic when you come home! #lovealpacas
