Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA): Activate MFA whenever possible to add an extra layer of security. This typically involves providing a second form of verification, such as a fingerprint or a unique code sent to your mobile device, in addition to your password. All well-known applications such as your social media platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn have this feature.

MFA is coming to the Peoplecare app and Online Member Services, so make sure that your mobile number is up to date on your cover.

  1. Use strong, unique passwords: Create complex passwords that include a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid reusing passwords across multiple accounts. Using a recommended password manager to keep your complex passwords and ensuring all passwords are unique is an excellent way to help manage your many passwords!
  2. Keep software up to date: Regularly update your operating system, web browsers, and other software applications. These updates often include important security patches that address vulnerabilities. These can also be automated to help manage this process.
  3. Be cautious of phishing attempts: Beware of suspicious emails, messages, or phone calls requesting personal information or urging you to click on links. Verify the authenticity of such requests before providing any sensitive data.
  4. Use reputable security software: Install and maintain reliable antivirus software and firewalls to protect against malware, viruses, and other threats. Keep them up to date and regularly run automated scans. Microsoft Defender (previously known as Windows Defender), as an example, is an effective free built-in antivirus program that comes with the latest Windows versions.
  5. Secure your Wi-Fi network: Change the default password of your Wi-Fi router, use strong encryption (WPA2 or higher), and disable remote management to prevent unauthorised access. This guidance can be provided by your internet provider.
  6. Practice safe browsing habits: Be cautious when visiting websites, especially those that require personal information or financial transactions. Look for the padlock symbol and the ‘s’ in ‘https’ in the website address to ensure a secure connection.
  7. Be mindful of social media sharing: Limit the amount of personal information you share on social media platforms. Adjust privacy settings to control who can view your posts and be cautious about accepting friend requests from unknown individuals.
  8. Backup your data: Regularly backup important files and data to an external hard drive or a secure cloud storage service. This ensures that you can recover your information in case of data loss or ransomware attacks.
  9. Educate yourself about security practices: Stay informed about the latest security threats and techniques used by hackers. Attend security awareness training, read reputable sources, and follow security experts for updates and advice.
